Workbook FAQs

  • While all students might relate, this workbook was specifically written for students navigating the transition from high school to college. If you’re looking for career direction as a young person, this workbook is for you.

  • Other career development books might expect you to already have answers about who you are, and focus on picking a single occupation. In today’s World of Work, that approach might not be the most helpful for everyone. In Follow the Sunrise, you will have an opportunity to develop a more helpful perspective on what it means to make career decisions, and feel ready to find your way forward, one career decision at a time.

  • Follow the Sunrise: A Student’s Guide to Making Career Decisions offers practical exercises and activities to help you feel ready to make your next career decision.

The workbook is organized into four sections.

Section 1: The first section is all about identifying the ideas and assumptions you have about yourself and the World of Work. Some ideas might be helpful, but others might actually be getting in your way. Your goal is to identify and address the unhelpful ideas and assumptions that could be impacting how ready you feel to make career decisions and learn new perspectives.

Section 2: In this section, you will learn core information about yourself, which is needed for making career decisions. Through reflection questions and concrete action steps, you will identify your core career motivators, interests, strengths, and skills.

Section 3: The third section offers tips and strategies for gathering information about majors and career ideas.

Section 4: Finally, in the fourth section, you will put all the pieces together and build a Career Identity Statement. Using the outline already created for you, your goal is to complete the Career Identity Statement with the information you’ve learned from the previous sections of the workbook. Once complete, the statement will be your navigational guide to provide direction for your next career decision.

  • The amount of time it will take to complete the workbook will depend on the reader. I encourage everyone to work at their own pace. To fully engage in all the activities, I would recommend taking at least one week to complete the reflection questions, exercises and activities.
